Room 1 support the St Joseph's School Gala

The holidays are a great chance to go through your unwanted toys, clothes and household goods and bring them along to school.  Please support our Gala and bring in your unwanted items.  You can bring them this week and during term time on Mondays between 2.30 and 3.30 pm, or on Fridays between 8.30 and 9.30 am, when the storage rooms will be open and "manned".

Check out the photos of the students in the Octopus' Garden taking up some items we have already collected.

WIND POWER !!

We had fun discovering about wind on Friday and up-cycling the aluminum cans into glittering wind chimes.

Come in and see the crazy art we produced blowing paint through a straw.

Making paper aeroplanes and kites was a popular activity too.

Welcome to the new fish in the Octopus' Garden

We are very excited to welcome 5 new students to Room 1 next term.  They have already visited us and will settle in perfectly to the Octopus Garden.

We hope all our families have a safe, fun and restful holidays.  See you all next term!

Rap-unzel Performance

Lucky Mrs Trengrove! Room 1 enjoyed a performance by the New Zealand Playhouse Theatre in the last week of term.  Thank you to the PTA for covering the cost of this for the children.

Class Reward Celebrated in Style

Following the students in the Octopus' Garden filling up their 100s chart with 100 scales, today they were rewarded with a Class Party.

What a fun day we had with a  dress-up fish and chips lunch with some of our parents, followed by fun and games in the afternoon.  Thank you to Melissa for picking up the food, and to Fish Stop in Alton Street for providing the amazing fish and chips.

Scooterly dooperly fun day Friday!

After much anticipation, FUN DAY Friday arrived, and so did our scooter sessions - we were so excited to show off our scooter skills.

Marty Clarke and his team explained all about scooter safety, how we should always wear a helmet and closed shoes and that the handle bars should sit in line with the top of our belly button.

We showed off how we can glide, switch feet, stop (a very important skill!) and turn corners.  We also practiced crossing the road by walking our scooters when it was safe.  Watch our video to see the amazing skills we now possess!

Junior Assembly

Well done to everyone for the wonderful performances and great behaviour we had at the Junior Assembly last Thursday.  It was neat to see so many parents there to support their children.

And for those of you who couldn't be there .....

Father Tony shows us around St Mary's

Today we met with Father Tony and he showed us around the church.  He showed us the special furniture that is there.  The lectern, altars, pews and organ aren't things we would find in our own homes.  We also looked at the Stations of the Cross, which are depicted by stone carvings on the walls.  These tell the sad story of the last few hours of Jesus' life on earth.

Road Safety - Stepping Out

Fun Day Friday was certainly that last week.  Discovery Time was based around the theme of road safety.   We painted road signs, drew pretend roads on really long paper and made a chalk town outside, working together.  We practiced our road rules with Mrs Robbie's vehicles and we even had our own road patrollers!  Room 5 joined us for some of the time - they seemed to enjoy themselves in the Octopus' Garden!

In the afternoon the Room 1 students ventured out with Constable John O'Donovan to learn how we can keep safe around the streets of Nelson.  We learned what to do when crossing the road by carrying out the kerb drill; we looked out for sneaky driveways and we even checked out the Smiggle shop in Morrison Square.  Thank you Constable John for taking such good care of us.

I'm sure everyone slept well after that busy day.

The Holy Spirit

This term we have been learning about the Holy Spirit.   On Fun Day Friday we performed a science experiment to show how three separate colours become one.  This reminds us of the Holy Spirit because God the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are all one God - 3 in 1.

Waka Huia: Treasure Box

We are incredibly fortunate to have the Suter Art Gallery on our doorstep.  This week we visited Esther to enjoy the treasures at the Suter.  We looked at the art and found things in the paintings that were similar.  The size of the paintings, the colours the artists had used and the shapes were some of the similarities we spotted.

Then, in groups, we created miniture art exhibition choosing our own paintings.  We made little figures of ourselves and 'visited' the Art Galleries.

VIsitors of the Furry Kind

Thank you to our Room 1 family for bringing in their precious pets - Diamond and Motorbike.  They were so well behaved and a massive hit among the children in the Octopus' Garden!  See for yourself.

St Joseph's School Gala

The School Gala date has been set for Sunday, 9th November and the parents on the PTA are already busy getting things ready.  On Friday Room 1 had a visitor in the Octopus' Garden.  Rachel came to speak to us about what we love about being at St Joseph's School and what the School Values mean to us.

We decorated prayer flags by drawing pictures of what we love about our school.  These will be displayed, along with the other students' flags, on Gala Day.  Mr Snuggles and Rachel were very pleased with how we did.

Stepping Out - Road Safety

Our Topic for the first part of the term is all about Road Safety.  Leading up to our 'walk' with Constable John in a few weeks we have been learning how we can keep ourselves safe on and near the road.  Watch us as we recite the poem "Stop, Look and Listen" and perform the actions we made up to it.  We also put them into practice on our 'chalk' road!!

Reanimation at the Suter Art Gallery

The children were amazing when we went to the Suter Art Gallery yesterday.  I was very proud of how they used their road safety skills when we walked there.

They interpreted the artwork in such a mature way.  The paintings were explained through movements, like statues, moving in lines, and canon when we take it in turns to do an action.  One comment a child made was that the birds in one painting reminded her of scary teenagers!!

Please watch and enjoy our movie of this trip.

Puppet time in the Octopus' Garden

Fun was definitely had on Fun Day Friday when Room 1 had their first Discovery Time.  Following the wonderful performance last Friday by Strings Attached, our theme was making and performing with puppets of our own.

Futsal skills shown by the students in Room 1!

Check out how well the students in the Octopus' Garden did when we had our first session of Futsal this week.   We were shown how to dribble the ball, kick it to ourselves, try and steal our classmate's ball while protecting our own.  All this in drizzle with smiles on our dials.  The best bit of all was when we finished with a game.  We can't wait for Ben to return next Tuesday.

Maths - Measurement

We are learning about measurement.  What a lot the children already know about comparing the sizes of our teddies.  We made three groups - the smallest teddies, bigger ones and the biggest of all.
Small teddies

Bigger teddies

Biggest teddies

In Room 1 we are all different heights.  We lined up from the shortest to the tallest.

Next week we will use different tools to measure our teddies, and even ourselves.

Autumn Leaves

In the Octopus' Garden we have noticed the changing of the seasons since we came back to school.   In between the showers this week, we had fun playing in the leaves and seeing all the autumn colours around us in the playground.
